Scarlet Gilia

    Scarlet Gilia

Along the road in the torn earth
    among the upturned rocks
in the clawed and scarred rubble
    scarlet gilia blooms in profusion
    as in its native meadowland.
In fact, there seems more here than anywhere,
as if it tries to prove some vital point
or send some message to me where I stand.

Whether it was its intent, I couldn’t say,
its language being different from ours,
but it seemed that it was telling me
by its presence in a place that’s stricken so,
that rough and stony as my path might be,
it will blossom, like a meadow full of flowers.
